Academic History

Peter Schmid, FRCP, MD, PhD, is the Clinical Director of the Breast Cancer Centre and Lead of the Centre of Experimental Cancer Medicine at Barts Cancer Institute, and an Honorary Consultant Medical Oncologist at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, UK. He also oversees the conduct of early phase trials and leads the academic breast cancer program at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. Prof. Schmid received his medical degree from the University of Munich, Munich, Germany, and Clinical Research PhD from Charité University, Berlin, Germany. He completed training in internal medicine, hematology and oncology at the University Hospital Charité, Berlin, Germany.

Prof. Schmid is the Chair of the European Society for Medical Oncology breast cancer faculty and co-author of international guidelines on the management of breast cancer. He is also part of the faculty for other major global oncology meetings and is a Clinical Expert for the UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), having been nominated by the Royal College of Physicians.

Speaking on novel treatments for breast cancer

Prof. Schmid’s research focuses on novel breast cancer treatments, with a particular expertise in triple-negative breast cancer. He has led and contributed to several international clinical trials investigating novel treatment combinations, antibody-drug conjugates and targeted-therapies. Prof. Schmid was a lead investigator of the Impassion130 and KEYNOTE-522 trials, which established atezolizumab and pembrolizumab respectively as standard of care treatments for breast cancer. His research  also incorporates translational studies investigating molecular factors and biomarkers of treatment efficacy and mechanisms of resistance.
